National Naval Medical Center
The National Naval Medical Center conducts leading edge medical research and provides comprehensive health care for military personnel and civilian leaders, including the President of the United States.
Completed in 1942, it is situated on a 243 acre campus in Bethesda, Maryland and is considered the flagship of the U.S. Navy's system of medical centers. Staffed by more than 6,500 skilled and dedicated employees, the National Naval Medical Center operates twenty-six clinics in five states and the District of Columbia as well as numerous other tenant commands, including the Department of Defense Medical School, the National Cancer Institute, and the Naval Medical Information Management Center.
This coin salutes the enduring dedication and commitment of all of the members of the National Naval Medical Center, who proudly serve this great American institution. The centerpiece of the coin's obverse is the medical center's majestic "Tower" landmark, which was dedicated in 1942 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Against a maroon backdrop, the reverse contains the caduceus, the universal symbol of the medical profession.
Minted in a brass alloy and finished in antique bronze, this coin's obverse is accented by rich Navy blue enamel. Each coin comes packaged with a header card that describes the history and mission of the National Naval Medical Center. |
