As the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force since 1947, the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) continues to play a vital role in the nation’s air defense. Originally established just days before the infamous Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, pilots in the CAP served with distinction throughout World War II.

Today, the Civil Air Patrol - which maintains a fleet of 550 single-engine aircraft - is uniquely positioned to provide reconnaissance and liaison support for homeland security initiatives. In a demonstration of its intelligence gathering capability, the CAP provided the first aerial pictures of ground zero following the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001.

Durable and detailed, this coin knife commemorates the outstanding national service provided by the members of the Civil Air Patrol for more than half a century. It features tough stainless steel blades that fold neatly into a uniquely designed die-struck coin handle.

Minted on the obverse is a masterful montage symbolizing the versatility and long history of service provided by America's Civil Air Patrol and includes a banner design with the words "Semper Vigilans" (Always Vigilant) - the official Civil Air Patrol motto. The reverse features an eagle with wings outstretched and contains a space for engraving. Struck in a brass alloy, the knife handle is coated in antique bronze. Each Civil Air Patrol coin knife comes displayed in a custom-fit, museum-quality leatherette presentation box.
