Mt. Whitney offers a variety of hiking and climbing opportunities, from day trips to longer, more strenuous ascents. The mountain's East Face route, first climbed in 1931, is a classic High Sierra easy route. The Northeast Face and the "Needles" to the south of the main summit contain a series of routes to challenge rock climbers of higher ability.
