Union Pacific's first locomotive steam engine was named in honor of the famous Civil War General. It was delivered to the Omaha, NB Train Yard in July, 1865, weighing in at between 10 and 12 tons. Its one pair of screws were four and a half or five feet in diameter, with inside connections and four ordinary track wheels in front. The tender was not apparently different from those now in use, except in size. F. A. Stearns of Massachusetts was master mechanic. The "General Sherman" served the railroad until about 1869 or 1870, and was the first locomotive to cross the Colorado River, into the town of Columbus, in the year 1867. This coin is a tribute to Engine 1, the General Sherman, and its historical service to the expansion of the American West. Minted in 2 Troy ounces of .999 pure silver, this coin is a proof strike. It comes sealed in an airtight acrylic capsule, and comes in an elegant leatherette presentation box. |
