Skunkworks U2 Dragonlady Silver

One of the most legendary American aircraft ever built, the U-2 Dragonlady was originally a product of Lockheed Martin's super-secret "Skunk Works" research and development unit.

Engineered as a single-engine, high-altitude, surveillance aircraft, the U-2 Dragonlady was designed as America"s most advanced secret weapon in the Cold War.  Launched in 1955, it remains a vital part of the U.S. Air Forcce fleet to this day.

Boasting an impressive wingspan of 103 feet and a total length of sixty-two feet, nine inches, the U-2 is capable of reaching a top speed of 510 miles per hour. Capable of flying at an altitude of greater than 70,000 feet, it regins as one of the most successful reconnaissance aircraft ever constructed.

This coin honors the U-2's enduring contribution to America's military efforts throughout the world. Part of the Lockheed Martin "Skunk Works" Series, the obverse features a rendering of the U-2 aircraft. The reverse bears the official "Skunk Works" emblem.
