With a staggering elevation of 14,496 feet, Mt. Whitney is the highest peak in the contiguous United States.

Dominating the Sierra Nevada Range, its steep slopes rise sharply out of Owens Valley on the eastern edge of the Sequoia National Park, gaining elevation at a dizzying rate until they culminate in the mountain's chiseled summit. Mt. Whitney offers a variety of hiking and climbing opportunities, from day trips to longer, more strenuous ascents. The mountain's East Face route, first climbed in 1931, is a classic High Sierra easy route. The northeast face and the "needles" to the south of the main summit contain a series of routes that are considerably more challenging.  

This coin salutes the courage of those climbers who have pushed up Mt. Whitney's steep slopes. The obverse contains a rendering of Mount Whitney and includes its elevation. The reverse depicts a mountaineer standing atop Mount Whitney's icy summit.
