1986 Taurus
When Ford introduced the Taurus in 1985 as a 1986 model, it hit a home run and won over thousands of new fans. Enveloped in a smooth, aerodynamic body, the futuristic Taurus had no grille, just a body-color panel where the Ford oval resided between the headlights. It had large glass areas with slim pillars, which granted excellent visibility.
The front-wheel-drive, midsize Taurus was available in either a four-door sedan or station wagon body style. The Taurus could seat six (or even up to eight in the wagon) as it was available with either a bench seat or bucket seats up front.
Four trim levels of the Taurus were available, L, MT5, GL and LX. The L and MT5 versions were fairly basic, the chief difference between these two being that the L had an automatic and the MT-5 had a manual five-speed transmission hooked up to the four-cylinder engine. A GL came with a few upgrades, such as dual visor mirrors, cargo net and, in the sedan, rear headrests and a rear seat fold-down center armrest. The LX was loaded with features such as air conditioning, power windows/locks/drivers seat, stereo cassette and cruise control, among others.
Heralded as a major design advance for American automobiles, the Taurus quickly established itself as a sales leader. Today, the Taurus continues to be a best selling sedan featuring the finest in ride engineering and state of the art comfort features.
