1964 1/2 Mustang
Introduced April 17, 1964, the Mustang was a mid-year model that set sales records that have yet to be broken. All over America, people were rushing into dealerships eager to get a look at Fords hottest new idea. With a low base price, the Mustang was offered with a series of optional equipment that enabled buyers to customize their car to reflect their personal taste. Available as a coupe, convertible, and later 2+2 fastback, the clean and sporty look of the Mustang earned it the prized Tiffany Award for Excellence in American Design.
While buyers were eagerly chasing the opportunity to own a Mustang, Ford production teams worked hard to keep up with demand, eventually closing a half year of production with over 300,000 units sold and demand still building.
Cleverly built on the modular platform of the durable Falcon, the Mustang was capable of housing a high performance V8, but also delivering fuel economy with the sturdy in-line six. The short wheelbase, long hood, and short deck created a muscular look without being overgrown. The Mustang was light and nimble but full of power and punch. So successful was the Mustang that it ushered in a whole new category of sporty four passenger cars called pony cars.
Today, after almost forty years, the Mustang name lives on in all new offerings from Ford with the same dedicated focus on performance and variety. Enthusiasts of the original Mustang restore their cars to the highest level of authenticity, participate in club activities, and compete in dedicated Mustang class racing.
