1949 Ford Custom
Throughout the second world war, Ford Motor Company dedicated its manpower and manufacturing capabilities to the war effort. As a result, there were no new cars introduced for several years. When the war came to an end, it was a race to the finish to see who would bring out the first all new car of the post war era. Ford was positioned once again to be the leader in the industry. With the all new bullet-nosed 1949 Ford, automobile design would never be the same.
The design of the 49 Ford was nothing short of revolutionary. Henry Ford II, grandson of Henry Ford, led Ford Motor Company through a significant revitalization of Ford management and as a result, an entirely new philosophy around the manufacturing and design of cars emerged. The new Ford featured a clean and simple shape that no longer catered to the design limitations that separated hood and fenders. With new metal stamping techniques, Ford created a simplified uniform body that wrapped around a family sized interior. As with nearly all significant innovations, the 49 Ford was not without its challenges. Body integrity problems plagued early productions samples, but Ford continued to refine and perfect in an effort to maintain a leadership role in design.
The clean lines and pure form of the Ford Custom influenced car design for more than half a century. Today, its unique look serves as the inspiration for one of Ford Motor Companys most exciting new concept cars, the Forty-Nine.
