1939 Ford Woody
The Woody Wagon has become one of the most recognized icons of the modern automotive era. Embraced by California surfing culture in the late 50s and 60s and immortalized in song, the Woody combined a sense of free spirited adventure and utility. But the origins of the Woody Wagon were far from such celebrated importance.
In 1921, Henry Fords lumber mill delivered raw wood to the many secondary manufacturers of wood body depot hacks. These service vehicles ferried train passengers from depot to final destinations. As the train depot evolved into a station with convenience services, the hacks were upgraded into station wagons, complete with roll up windows and comfort features. By 1938, Ford was building their own factory wood bodies on a standard sedan chassis.
Despite its humble origins, the Woody Wagon became one of the highest priced offerings in Fords model line up. Contrasted against the standard stamped steel bodied sedans and wagons, the hand crafting and unique look of the wooden bodies had a special presence and an aura of value. The Woody became something of a wealthy mans statement often being chauffeur driven. Today, the Woody Wagon remains a highly sought after and valuable collectible as a unique blend of hand craftsmanship and manufacturing efficiency.
