1928 Model A
Like many men with vision, Henry Ford relied on a combination of gut instinct and pioneering spirit. Yet the success of the Model T had so dramatically confirmed the Ford name and products as an American legend that it became nearly impossible for Henry Ford to let go of the Model T. Young upstarts and growing competitors had watched the Ford success and knew they had to take big chances to gain market share. The time had come to put the Tin Lizzy to bed. By the late twenties, sales for the Model T had dropped significantly enough that even Henry himself had to admit that change was necessary.
Ford began an unprecedented quest to not only redesign the Model T, but to rethink it entirely. Once again, the Ford that emerged did nothing short of redefine the conventions of the modern automobile. The Model A debuted with innovations such as safety glass, hydraulic brakes, automatic wipers, and a self starter. Most distinctive of all, however, was the clean and refined styling of the Model A. The pure upright form and clean lines made the Model A not only attractive, but with the modular use of frame and cowl forward components, Ford could make a variety of models to suit the changing needs of everyone from farmers to business men.
To ensure a strong market introduction, the new Model A was priced only a few dollars more than the venerable Model T and considerably lower than most competitors. Introduced with orders in excess of 400,000, the Model A went on to a 5 million unit run of nearly four years before being upgraded to the V8.
