The 91 Explorer

Like the Model T, the 1991 Ford Explorer was not the first compact sport utility vehicle. But it would prove to be one of the most popular vehicles in this new market segment, eventually selling close to four million units over a ten year period. In those same ten years, the Ford Explorer covered the world roadways more than any other sport utility vehicle ever built.

The unique combination of rugged body-on-frame construction and available luxury car-like options enabled buyers to construct their vehicles as durable family transport, or purpose-built off road utility vehicles. The variety of models available consisted of four and two door models, two and four wheel drive versions, and a variety of power train options. This “build it your way” philosophy enabled buyers to build the car to suit their needs. The Explorer delivered world class quality with passenger car comfort, technology like ABS brakes and “touch drive” easy access to four wheel drive, along with a whopping 81 feet of cargo space.

The Explorer is often considered the pioneer in this segment largely due to the high quality construction and world renowned Ford truck reliability. Consistently among the top ten in sales, the Explorer also has been ranked as one of the highest in customer satisfaction and loyalty. Within the first year of introduction, the Explorer was an immediate success, ranking third overall in truck sales. Although the Explorer was built on a truck platform, power steering, air conditioning, and improved ride comfort made for a very drivable vehicle. As a result, the Explorer brought new customers into Ford showrooms, particularly those who had never considered owning a truck before.
