Founded more than two-hundred years ago, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America.
Strategically located atop a commanding plateau on the west bank of the Hudson River, it served as a major American stronghold throughout the Revolutionary War, gaining in importance as the war progressed. In 1779, General George Washington located his headquarters there, planning the bold campaigns that would ultimately force a British surrender in 1781. Since its inception, the mission of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point has been to train and inspire the Army's Corps of Cadets to ready them for a career of professional excellence and service to the nation.
