This oval brass coin salutes the U.S. Marine Paratrooper. Struck in a brass alloy, this coin has an attractive use of enamel, making a striking impression. The reverse contains the logo of the Marines set in a semitransparent red enamel that allows the look of radiance. The coin comes packaged in a polybag with a header card.

German success with airborne forces in the early days of WWII prompted every major military in the world to explore the new concept---and that included the U.S. Marine Corps. The development of a Marine parachute program began in May 1940. Three tactical scenarios were envisioned for the parachute battalions: as a reconnoitering and raiding force, as a spearhead or advanced guard to hold strategic objectives until the arrival of larger forces, and as an independent force operating in the guerilla role for extended periods. Sometimes referred to as Paramarines, Marine paratrooper became the preferred name. Today, the Marines train parachutists primarily for reconnaissance operations.

Marine paratroopers gained acclaim during World War II for their heroic role in America's success in the Pacific against Japan, helping to turn the tide in the war that helped launch the Allied victory. Over the years, paratroopers have been utilized successfully in America's military operations throughout the world adding a powerful element to the world's most fearsome military force.
