100 Peso Mexican Silver Coin - .64 OZ Silver
100 Peso Mexican Silver Coin
In 1977, Mexico introduced its first-ever 100 Pesos coin. The issue commemorating General Morelos, whose image appears on the obverse, only lasted until 1979 when it was replaced with a smaller base-metal coin. Northwest Territorial Mint has a limited supply of the 100 Pesos silver coins in various years. These coins were among the world’s last circulating coins struck in silver. Most were melted long ago for the silver content, due to the rising cost of silver. These coins, one of many coins from Mexico and around the world that are high content in silver, are both excellent as an investment and a collectible.
These giant US Silver Dollar-sized coins were minted in silver of .720 fineness at the renowned Mexico City Mint. The 100 Pesos are both larger around and heavier than the US Morgan silver dollar. With more than half an ounce of silver the actual silver weight (ASW) is 20 grams, or .6429 ounces of silver. The 100 Pesos are a great way to diversify, own silver in foreign coins, collect, or keep as an heirloom to pass on to other generations.
The obverse features the image of General Morelos along with the words Plata Pura 20 gr. Ley .720 (Pure Silver 20 grams, .720 fine). The reverse bears the inscription Estados Unidos Mexicanos (United Mexican States) and the Coat of arms of Mexico, an image of an eagle standing on a cactus with a snake in its beak.
