Born in 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky, Lincoln moved to Illinois at the age of twenty-one. He began his distinguished political career in 1834 as a Representative in the Illinois State Legislature and was admitted to the Illinois State Bar as an attorney just three years later in 1837.
After serving for four consecutive terms as a state representative, Lincoln helped to found the Republican Party in 1856, and was instrumental in shaping the party's anti-slavery platform. Just four years later, he was nominated as the presidential candidate for the party he helped to create. On November 6, 1860, Lincoln was elected President of the United States and went on to become one of the greatest leaders in American history.
