One of the nation's most celebrated public servants, Adlai Stevenson spent his entire adult life fighting to improve the lives of ordinary Americans.

Born in 1900, Stevenson was raised in the small town of Bloomington, Illinois. A gifted scholar, he graduated from Princeton University in 1922 and went on to earn his law degree from Chicago's Northwestern University Law School in 1926.

Stevenson began his career in government in 1931, traveling to the nation's capital to aid in the development of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal initiatives. During World War II, he worked as an assistant to the Secretary of the Navy and went on to serve as a delegate to the United Nations following the war.

Elected by an overwhelming majority, Adlai Stevenson became Governor of Illinois in 1949 and served until 1953.

As Governor of Illinois and later as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, he earned a reputation for being a straightforward leader and a tough negotiator, whose service was always marked by the highest degree of honesty and integrity.

As part of the Illinois' Commemorative Medallion Series, this coin honors Adlai Stevenson's dedicated service to the State of Illinois and the nation at large. The obverse features a rendering of Adlai Stevenson. The reverse features the Seal of the State of Illinois.

Minted in a brass alloy and finished in antique bronze, this coin comes packaged with a certificate of authenticity that describes Adlai Stevenson's many contributions to America.
