Located on a 12-acre island in New York harbor, the Statue of Liberty is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy for citizens throughout the globe. A gift from France to the people of the United Stated, the famed “Lady Liberty,” has been a beacon of hope to immigrants and all people searching for the promise of America since it was raised in 1886.

The medallion’s obverse shows the proud lady standing tall on Ellis Island. The reverse displays a ship heading toward the New York shore. Minted in deep relief using a special "splash minting" process, this coin is struck in a brass alloy and given a beautiful lacquered finished.
