Located in eastern Arizona, Petrified Forest National Park features one of the world’s largest groupings of petrified wood. Colored with the rich and vibrant hues of the Arizona desert, the park contains displays of 200-million year old fossils as well as 341 square miles of land that includes scenic vistas and diverse desert wildlife. 

The medallion’s obverse shows the ancient wood of the forest with the date the park was founded in 1962. The reverse shows one of the park regulars, a swift fox. Minted in deep relief using a special "splash minting" process, this coin is struck in a brass alloy and given a beautiful lacquered finished.
