This proud tradition of Marine marksmanship originated during the War of 1812, where skilled Marines would sit atop the masts of U.S. Naval vessels and take aim at enemies during ship-to-ship battles. Today’s USMC sharpshooters are trained to be the world’s elite shots, with the accuracy of a sniper and the rapid fire capabilities of a rifleman.

Only a chosen few have the required mental and physical skills necessary to become a Marksman in the United States Marine Corps. Possessing elite mental and physical abilities, Marksmen are trained to spot suspicious activity and, when necessary, eliminate high-profile targets.

This coin salutes the legendary courage and commitment of the highly skilled Marksman who draw a bead on America’s enemies with relentless resolve.

The coin’s obverse shows elite Marine Marksmen defending the USS Wasp from a boarding party during the War of 1812. The reverse shows the renowned Eagle, Globe, and Anchor symbol of the United States Marine Corp. It is minted in a brass alloy and given an antique bronze finish.
