Uncirculated 2008-S Bald Eagle Young Collectors’ Set Clad Half Dollar Commemorative

The American Bald Eagle is our nation’s proud symbol of strength, freedom, and democracy, and a favorite subject for American coins. In 2008, for the first time in seven years, the US Mint issued a commemorative half-dollar featuring its most majestic living treasure, the Bald Eagle.

Issued to mark the 35th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act and celebrate the Bald Eagle’s extraordinary recovery from the brink of extinction, the set, designed especially for children, consists of packaging featuring the US Mint’s “Mint Kids” as they learn about the Bald Eagle’s recovery and one commemorative half-dollar Bald Eagle coin. All half-dollars were struck at the US Mint in San Francisco.

The clad half-dollar depicts two Bald Eagle chicks in a nest with an unhatched egg. The reverse of the coin features the Bald Eagle, “Challenger,” famed for his awe-inspiring flights during the US national anthem at major sports events. Challenger is a Bald Eagle raised in captivity that could not safely be returned to the wild after imprinting on humans.
