2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin
In 1907 the artistry of Augustus Saint-Gaudens was used by the United States Mint to produce the 1907 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin. However, Saint-Gaudens’ elegant original striding-Liberty design was never produced in commercial quantities in the ultra high relief design because at that time it was impossible to do so.
In 2009 the United States Mint created a tour de force by producing a modern version of that famous 1907 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin, utilizing modern technology and advanced minting techniques. The stunning 2009 version was made in a slightly smaller diameter and composed of 24-karat gold, thus making it easier to strike and maintain the fidelity of the original design. The original Saint-Gaudens plasters were digitally mapped by the Mint and used in the die-making process. The coin date was changed to 2009, and four additional stars were added to represent the current fifty States.
The MMIX Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins are 4 mm thick and contain one ounce of .9999 fine gold. All are uncirculated (business strike) coins. All are made at the US Mint, West Point, and are packaged in the beautiful polished mahogany US Mint presentation box.
