USCG Air Station Savannah

Since 1963, US Coast Guard Station Savannah has provided round-the-clock Search and Rescue coverage for 450 miles of Atlantic shoreline extending from the border of North and South Carolina southward to Melbourne, Florida. It is not unusual to see news coverage of a bright orange HH-65C rescue helicopter hovering over a floundering vessel, lowering a sling to bring to safety those still on board, since the Station conducts more than 250 Search and Rescue missions each year.

Strategically located in the heart of the southern Atlantic coastline, the Station routinely deploys helicopters aboard Coast Guard cutters along the East Coast and throughout the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.  They are a key component in the fight against illicit drug trafficking and in maintaining maritime law enforcement. Aircrew bravery and skill during operations in tropical storms, hurricanes and other disasters is legendary.

The US Coast Guard Air Station Savannah challenge coin is a symbol of personnel dedication to duty, heroism in the face of extreme adversity, and skill in executing their duties, wherever required. The bold coin is finished in rich enamels of bright orange, green and blue, showing an HH-65C helicopter on patrol along the shoreline, and inclusive of Air Facility Charleston, with the inscription Low Country Lifesavers.  The reverse shows the US Coast Guard crest floating on a background of sea-blue.
