Coin Presentation Box1983 1984 Proof Olympic Commemorative Dollar Set

This unique set consists of a 1983 Olympic proof dollar and a 1984 Olympic proof dollar. Together they make a set prized by collectors, and commemorate America’s hosting of and participation in the XXIII Olympiad held in Los Angeles. The Olympic Torch Relay was unique itself in that the torch was carried continuously by runners on foot. The relay started in New York and ended in Los Angeles, traversing 33 states, covering more than 9,320 miles, and involving 3,616 runners.

The 1983 Olympic proof dollar was designed by the chief engraver of the US Mint, Elizabeth Jones. The obverse is a representation of a classic Greek discus thrower, flanked by the Olympic symbol, with the surround being “Los Angeles XXIII Olympiad.” Also in the field are “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and “1983.” The reverse of this beautiful coin is a noble depiction of the head and upper body of an American Bald Eagle, the nation’s symbol. The circumference reads “United States of America, One Dollar.”

The second proof dollar in this set, the 1984 Olympic proof, was designed by Robert Graham, the same who created the controversial headless sculpture placed at the entrance to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The obverse of the coin is, in fact, a re-creation of that sculpture, with the title “Liberty.”  The reverse is a full image of an alert Bald Eagle, with the surround “United States of America, One Dollar.”`

These beautiful proof dollar coins are made of 90% silver, and are struck at the San Francisco Mint. The set is presented in a beautiful display case, complete with Certificate of Authenticity.
