This Air Force Special Operations Command coin commemorates all “Special Ops” warriors who have displayed unusual courage and fearless determination while accomplishing clandestine missions around the globe, many of these valiant warriors sacrificing their lives in service to their country. “Special Ops” warriors have flown missions in Central America, Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and other places unknown throughout the world. Special Operations were first conducted from Hurlburt Field beginning in 1961, when the Air Force Tactical Air Command first activated a training squadron to fly operations against guerrillas, either as an overt Air Force operation or in an undefined covert capacity. The Air Force Special Operations Command continues to fly sensitive worldwide operations missions from Hurlburt Field. The “Special Ops” challenge coin features the Air Force Special Operations Command insignia, a dramatic one showing a winged dagger supporting a red, white and blue star-circle. The reverse of the coin is also highlighted in rich enamels, being the Air Force emblem finished in traditional brilliant blue and white. ™ Department of the Air Force.
