Bethesda Naval Medical Center

Seventy years of exceptional medical service for members of the United States armed forces and their families. That is the legacy of Bethesda National Naval Medical Center, commemorated by this special coin. First established in 1940, the Naval Medical Center played a critical role in supporting our servicemen in peace and war, both here and abroad. The National Naval Medical Center was exceptional in its ability to meet the unique demands of military service and military medicine. Additionally, the Center was famous as “The President’s Hospital,” since from the time of Bethesda’s opening, every President of the United States has utilized Bethesda’s services during his term of office, and for the remainder of his life following presidential service.

The Bethesda National Naval Medical Center officially closes in 2010, but emerges as an expanded unit together with Walter Reed Army Medical Center to become an integrated health care delivery system. The new facility will be known as the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). It is located on the grounds of the current National Naval Medical Center campus in Bethesda, MD.

This beautiful coin features the Naval Center’s tower, currently on the list of the National Register of Historic Places.  The tower will remain as the center point of the new facility. Across the tower is a banner reading “1940-2010,” the circumference reading “National Naval Medical Center—Bethesda.” This coin is minted in bronze, brushed with an antique finish, and highlighted with rich enamels. The reverse celebrates the occasion with the following declarations: “Commemorating 70 Years of Excellence in Military Medicine” and “The President’s Hospital.” The interior displays the official insignia of the Department of Defense and the five branches of the United States Armed Forces.
