Operation Red Dawn

For eight months, one of the world’s most ruthless dictators ran and hid from a coalition of forces determined to make him pay for his monstrous acts and prevent him from acquiring means to spread his evil. This challenge coin commemorates Operation Red Dawn, which concluded with the historic capture of Saddam Hussein as he cowered in a hole in the ground in the town of ad-Dawr, Iraq, near his hometown of Tikrit, on 13 December, 2003,

Americans, Kurds, Kuwaitis, and all freedom-loving peoples of the world cheered as the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 4th Infantry Division, under the command of Col. James Hickey of the 4th Infantry Division, together with Joint Operations Task Force 121 -- an elite covert special operations team -- secured the brutal despot for his date with justice.

For those who participated, or those who are just a little bit safer, this coin marks a turning point in the battle for peace. The obverse of this challenge coin features the ace of spades, Saddam Hussein’s card in the deck of playing cards that the US-led coalition developed to assist troops in identifying the most wanted members of Saddam Hussein’s evil regime. The reverse features a map of Iraq, and the town of Tikrit, ad-Dawr, where Hussein was taken into custody, and includes the famous quote from L. Paul Bremer, the US Administrator to Iraq: “We got him.”
