AH-1 Cobra Challenge Coin

The AH-1 was the backbone of the United States Army's attack helicopter fleet for more than two decades, and the AH-1 twin engine versions remain the primary attack helicopter for the United States Marine Corps. AH-1 Cobras were first used by the Army during the Tet offensive in 1968 and through the end of the Vietnam War.

Huey Cobras provided fire support for ground forces, escorted transport helicopters and provided aerial rocket artillery. They also formed "hunter killer" teams, working in tandem with OH-6A scout helicopters. One OH-6 would fly low and slow to detect enemy forces. If the OH-6 drew fire, the Cobra could strike at the enemy positions.

Matching its namesake, the AH-1 coin is bold and impressive, capturing the AH-1 Cobra as a deadly gunship inflicting mayhem and destruction on the Viet Cong forces. It is a tribute to the bravery and dedication of the warriors who served with pride to preserve freedom and to engage the enemy forces in combat.

Minted in bronze, this AH-1 Cobra challenge coin was struck using special "splash" dies, giving this coin exceptional quality and detail. The obverse of this challenge coin features front, side, and top profiles of the AH-1 Cobra in the background, while an AH-1 Cobra in attack occupies the foreground. The reverse of this coin features the emblem of the United States Army.
