Vicksburg National Military Park 5 oz US Mint America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin

Designed to captivate both silver investors seeking a unique way to add to their portfolio as well as coin collectors who delighted by the US Mint’s series of state and National Parks quarters, the US Mint America the Beautiful Silver Bullion 5 oz coin program, begun in 2010, has achieved both goals. Commemorating one of the critical battles of the US Civil War, the Vicksburg National Military Park America the Beautiful Silver Bullion coin – in investment-grade, .999-silver – features the Navy Ship U.S.S. Cairo as it would have appeared on the Yazoo River during the battle.

All told, 56 coins honoring historic and beautiful American places will be released as part of the US Mint America the Beautiful Silver Bullion 5 oz coin program. Their weight, content and purity are guaranteed by the US government. They are uniquely sized US Mint coins, measuring 3 inches in diameter with a legal-tender face value of 25 cents. (The 25-cent face value is much below the market price of silver – which is reported in the financial press – which been substantially higher for decades.) Each coin’s fineness and weight is incused on its edge. These coins will be in demand among investors for their .999-fine silver content, and sought among collectors as the mates to the US Mint America the Beautiful Quarters series. This combination makes them superior as both investments and collectibles.

The reverse is the design of Thomas Cleveland and was engraved by Joseph Menna. The image on the coin’s reverse is that of the U.S.S. Cairo, one of the Union’s seven powerful ironclad vessels, as it sailed down the Yazoo River in early days of the protracted Vicksburg Campaign in late 1862. Forces under General Ulysses S. Grant eventually won victory in 1863 and secured the strategic Mississippi River for the Union. Earlier in the campaign, however, the Cairo met a less-successful fate, striking mines placed in the river and sinking within 12 minutes, the first U.S. ship in history to be sunk by a mine. Today the Cairo has been raised and restored, and is on display in a museum in the park.

America the Beautiful Quarters are issued in the order the selected national park or site was established, and as the series progresses, demand is expected to increase for the items issued earliest – and the five 2010 US Mint America the Beautiful 5 oz coins were sold out almost instantly.  The Vicksburg 5-oz silver coin is the ninth overall and the fourth released in 2011. Because US Mint America the Beautiful 5 oz silver bullion coins are expected to be introduced over a period of 12 years, buying the coins as they are released gives you the best chance to include all of them in your collection at a reasonable price – and purchasing them one at a time enables you to add them to your collection at the pace that works best for you.
