Collectors and history buffs will enjoy this proof silver coin celebrating one of America’s pivotal historic moments. The US Mint’s Star Spangled Banner Commemorative Proof Silver Dollar is a representation of the morning of September 14, 1814, when Francis Scott Key spied the American flag still flying defiantly over Fort McHenry despite a devastating 25-hour bombardment by British forces during the War of 1812.

This silver dollar measures 1-1/2 inches in diameter, and is composed of 90% silver. This silver dollar is a proof coin, created to be the best version of a coin possible. The Star-Spangled Banner silver dollars were struck with carefully cut and hand-polished dies, as well as highly polished blanks. This creates a mirror-like finish to the coin, and the result is both stunning and valuable.

Stirred by the symbolism of the proud flag and the unyielding fort, Key immediately wrote a poem he entitled, “The Defense of Fort McHenry.” Key suggested it be sung to the melody of a British song, “To Anacreon in Heaven.” By 1916 it had become known as “The Star-Spangled Banner,” with President Woodrow Wilson ordering it be played at military ceremonies. On March 3, 1931, Congress and President Herbert Hoover made “The Star-Spangled Banner” the national anthem of the United States.

The obverse of the Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Silver Dollar captures the triumphant nature of the Battle of Baltimore at Fort McHenry, depicting the metaphorical Lady Liberty waving the 15-star, 15-stripe Star-Spangled Banner with Fort McHenry in the background. The reverse focuses on the flag itself, and shows a waving modern American flag.

As the most beautiful versions of a limited-mintage coin, the Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollar deserves a place in your collection. It comes in original Mint Packaging.
