A moment in history and a nation’s pride is captured forever on a coin – the Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Silver Dollar from the US Mint. Whether you are a collector or a history buff, this coin – composed of 90% silver and 1-1/2 inches in diameter – will make a fine addition to your possessions.

The story is this -- Francis Scott Key visited the invading British fleet in Chesapeake Bay to secure the release of his friend, Dr. William Beanes, who had been taken prisoner when the British invaded Washington. Though he secured his friend’s release, the British held them aboard while they shelled Fort McHenry, the fort charged with the protection of Baltimore. After a 25-hour pounding, the smoke cleared – and Key could see the American flag flying proudly over the fort. Inspired by the sight, he penned a verse he called “The Defense of Fort McHenry,” including a note that it be sung to the popular British tune, “To Anacreon in Heaven.” In short time, the words had been published in newspapers all along the eastern seaboard. By 1916, the song – now popularly called “The Star-Spangled Banner” – had been ordered to be played at military ceremonies by President Woodrow Wilson; by 1931, President Herbert Hoover was signing legislation making it the national anthem.

Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the coin’s obverse features a representation of Liberty, the flag flown during the battle, and Fort McHenry itself. The reverse features a modern American flag, billowing in the breeze. Packaged in original Mint Packaging for ease of display and convenient storage.
