Chaco Culture National Historical Park 5 oz US Mint America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin

The twelfth coin in the US Mint’s popular oversized silver quarters series, this 2012 Chaco Culture National Historical Park America the Beautiful coin features the homelands of the native Pueblo, Hopi, and Navajo of the American Southwest, inhabitants of Chaco Canyon and the surrounding area, in 5 oz of collectible, investment-grade, .999-fine silver.

As with the other coins of the ambitious US Mint America the Beautiful Silver Bullion 5 oz coin program, its weight, content and purity are guaranteed by the US government. Unique among the coins struck by the US Mint, Chaco Culture and the others in the series are a huge 3 inches in diameter and carry a legal-tender face value of 25 cents. (Though real, the 25-cent face value is dwarfed by the market price of silver – which has for decades been much higher.) Each coin’s fineness and weight is incused on its edge. These coins will be sought by investors for their .999-fine silver content, and demanded by collectors as the mates to the US Mint America the Beautiful Quarters series. This combination makes them superior as both investments and collectibles.

In all, there will be up to 56 specially designed numismatic offerings between 2010 and 2021.

Located in the Four Corners area of New Mexico, Chaco Culture became part of the National Park system on March 11, 1907. It was major cultural and economic center for the indigenous peoples of the American Southwest whose roads and trading network spanned a 40,000-square-mile swath of the continent. Its visitors are fascinated by its centuries-old multi-storied “great houses,” subterranean structures called “great kivas,” as well as petroglyphs and pictographs. These ancient people left stunning architecture aligned by astronomy and geometry that still awes today – so much so that the site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

Designed by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, two elevated kivas – part of the Chetro Ketl Complex – command the reverse the image on the quarters’ reverse, along with the north wall of Chetro Ketl and the north wall of the canyon. John Flanagan’s iconic 1932 portrait of George Washington is on the obverse.

Given the three-inch diameter and 0.16-inch thickness of these coins, detail that cannot be shown easily in a regular quarter easily captures the eye.

Issued in the order the selected national park or site was established, America the Beautiful Quarters are thought to be more in demand for those released earliest – the five 2010 US Mint America the Beautiful 5 oz coins were sold out almost instantly.  Because US Mint America the Beautiful 5 oz silver bullion coins are expected to be introduced over a period of 12 years, buying the coins as they are released gives you the best chance to include all of them in your collection at a reasonable price – and purchasing them one at a time enables you to add them to your collection at the pace that works best for you. There is a 25,000 mintage limit on these Chaco Culture 5 oz America The Beautiful uncirculated coins, which are expected to be released by the US Mint on July 9, 2012. To lock in today’s prices, they are available for pre-order now, and should ship to you in mid-to-late July.
