USCG Cutter Munro (WHEC 724)

This challenge coin salutes the mission of the US Coast Guard Cutter Munro (WHEC 724) and honors the high caliber sailor—past-and present—who have served on her decks.

The tenth in a class of twelve 378-foot cutters, the vessel is named for Signalman First Class Douglas Munro, the only member of the US Coast Guard to receive the Medal of Honor for his heroism during the Guadalcanal campaign in World War II.  The Munro was commissioned in 1971, and after stints in Boston and Seattle, she is now homeported in Kodiak, Alaska. Carrying a full complement of 167 officers and crew, the Munro has played a high-profile role in regional and out-of-area missions. In 2004, she assisted relief efforts following the tsunami that struck Indonesia. And, in 2008, the Munro led the rescue of 20 crew members from the sinking fishing vessel Alaska Ranger in an operation deemed one of the largest cold-water rescues in the history of the Coast Guard.

Minted in bronze antique, this vibrant challenge coin is accented in crisp enamel on both sides. The obverse features the colorful crest of the Munro against a white field. The reverse depicts a stunningly detailed rendering of the Munro underway, set against a deep blue enamel background.
