USCG Cutter Abbie Burgess (WLM 553)

For the crew of US Coast Guard Cutter Abbie Burgess, this coin is an enduring reminder of challenges conquered and missions completed amidst the turbulent waters of the North Atlantic.

The 175-foot black-hulled buoy tender homeported in Rockland, Maine maintains aids to navigation along the state’s jagged coastline from Boothbay Harbor all the way to the Canadian border, including the Penobscot and St. George rivers. At full displacement, she can travel at 12 knots and can remain at sea for up to five days before replenishing. All told, the crew of the Abbie Burgess is responsible for 336 lighted and unlighted floating navigation aids and also helps service aids from other Coast Guard units when necessary. Commissioned in 1998, the Abbie Burgess is now one of 14 Keeper Class Buoy Tenders tasked with ensuring that navigation buoys are working properly at all times.

The obverse of this impressively detailed challenge coin displays the coat of arms of the Abbie Burgess, filled with symbols that connect the cutter to its namesake, who faithfully kept watch at the Matinicus Rock Lighthouse. The reverse of this coin features the Coast Guard seal in an antique bronze finish.
