Fort Campbell, KY, Rakkasans The 187th Infantry Regiment of the historic 101st Airborne Division, nicknamed the Rakkasans, perfectly exemplifies the US Army’s unprecedented ability to defend the United States across the world and protect its global interests. From the skies of Germany during World War II, to Afghanistan and Iraq, the Rakkasans have been the primary regiment for incursions and counter insurgency actions. The nickname Rakkasans comes from a clumsy translation of a Japanese word. When a Japanese translator attempted to explain the capabilities of the 187th to some dignitaries, the best he could do was form a word in Japanese that meant “falling down umbrella men,” not having a proper term for airborne soldiers. Amused by the term, the locals began calling the troopers that and it stuck as point of pride for the unit. Minted in solid bronze, and hand-finished with an antique patina for exceptional quality and detail, this coin is dedicated to the men and women of the 187th Infantry Regiment, who bravely fight to preserve our freedoms. The obverse features the emblem of 101st Airborne Division, imbued with durable enamel accents, with the Regiment’s nickname “Rakkasans.” The reverse displays the seal of the United States Army.
