Coast Guard Cutter Venturous This brilliantly-enameled challenge coin is a testament to the long and distinguished history of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Venturous, and embodies the pride felt by all who have served this unit over the years. Venturous has served the Coast Guard for more than four decades. First based in San Diego, California and currently homeported in St. Petersburg, Florida, she has plied the waters of both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans carrying out a diverse set of missions. The thirteenth of 16 Reliance-class cutters, Venturous was commissioned on September 12, 1968 and was initially designed for search and rescue operations. In the years since, she has undergone several major overhauls to upgrade systems and technology to better meet the demands of today’s multi-mission Coast Guard force. Today, Venturous works closely with Caribbean and South American nations on major narcotics interdiction operations, along with her continued commitment to marine law enforcement, search and rescue, and domestic defense. Minted in a brass alloy, this coin is accented with vibrant enamel on both sides, bringing out the extraordinary detail of the design. The obverse features the official crest and shield of the Venturous, which proudly proclaims the cutter’s motto “Nemo Supra” (None Better). The reverse displays the Coast Guard emblem against the tri-color band of the official Coast Guard Mark and Signature. Immediately below is a rendering of the Sun Shine Skyway Bridge, the landmark that always reminds the crew of Venturous that they are close to home.
