Naval Station Great Lakes

Located in Northern Illinois, a train ride from Chicago, Naval Station Great Lakes is the Navy’s second largest base in Illinois and its only basic training facility. Known as the “Quarterdeck of the Navy” this station carries on the great tradition of leading the charge by skillfully training the next generation of sailors.

Built during Presidency of Theodore Roosevelt, Naval Station Great Lakes was a novel concept at the time. Not only would recruits train a thousand miles from the nearest ocean, but in that day most training was accomplished underway. Today, the Naval Station trains over 40,000 recruits annually and over 16,000 sailors in technical trades.

Minted from solid bronze, using special deep-relief coining dies, and hand-finished with an antique patina for exceptional quality and detail, this medallion is dedicated to the former and current Naval and Civilian personnel who have proudly served this great Naval Station in its important role in this nation's freedom. The obverse depicts the front of “Building One,” featuring its famous clock tower. The reverse displays the emblem of the Naval Station
