Coast Guard Cutter William Flores WPC 1103

The USCGC William Flores WPC 1103 is the third of the Coast Guard’s Sentinel-class Fast Response Cutters. Heavily-armed and able to travel at speeds in excess of 28 knots, these cutters are uniquely capable of responding with speed, agility, and power to any crisis at any time.

This coin honors the crewmembers of William Flores—past, present, and future. It also memorializes the cutter’s namesake, Seaman Apprentice William Flores, posthumous recipient of the Coast Guard’s highest honor for bravery. Flores died while trying to rescue shipmates following the collision of the Coast Guard Cutter Blackhorn and the tanker Capricorn on January 28, 1980.

The William Flores was launched on November 29, 2011 and is home ported in Miami, Florida. The 154-foot cutter and its 24-person crew carry out drug and alien interdiction, search and rescue patrols, and national defense operations.

Minted in bronze with a shiny finish, this challenge coin is a lasting symbol of the mission of the William Flores and the proud legacy it carries forward. The obverse features the ship’s crest, emblazoned with the words: “Courage in Adversity.” The reverse features a detailed rendering of the William Flores in bright enamel color with the state of Florida and the Coast Guard seal in the background.
