2013 Perry’s Victory And International Peace Memorial 5 oz US Mint America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin

“Don’t give up the ship!” Commemorating Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, the US Mint’s second 5 oz bullion coin of 2013 in the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin series honors the brave soldiers and sailors that fought in 1812’s Battle of Lake Erie.

Every coin minted in the impressive America the Beautiful Silver Bullion 5 oz coin program, has its weight, content and purity guaranteed by the US government. Unique among other coins issued by the US Mint, these pieces are a huge 3 inches in diameter and each carries a legal-tender face value of 25 cents – though the market price of silver has been higher for many decades. These coins have been sought by investors for their .999-fine silver content, and demanded by collectors to complete the US Mint America the Beautiful Quarters series. This combination makes them superior as both investments and collectibles.

After a harrowing battle with the British on Lake Erie, Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry punctuated his triumph with the now famous phrase, “We have met the enemy and they are ours.”  Established in 1936, the memorial – towering 352 feet over Lake Erie – celebrates the lasting peace between the United States, Canada, and Great Britain that commenced with the end of the War of 1812. Six are buried beneath – three Americans and three British – near the longest undefended border in the world. It was first established as a national site on March 3, 1919.

The obverse of the coin features the 1932 portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan, and brings out the craftsmanship of the original model. The reverse depicts the statue of Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry in front of the Peace Memorial, which is one of the tallest of its kind in the U.S.
