2003 First Flight Centennial Commemorative Clad Proof Half Dollar

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers historic first flight at Kitty Hawk in North Carolina, Congress authorized the 2003 First Flight Centennial Commemorative Clad Proof Half Dollar. The not so simple act of successfully leaving the ground, and staying aloft in a controlled manner, ushered in a new era of aviation and commerce.

Minted in copper-nickel, the coin’s obverse was designed by John Mercanti and depicts the majestic Wright Monument on top of Big Kill Devil Hill. The reverse, by Donna Weaver, features Wilbur piloting the Wright 1903 Flyer through the air for the first time, as Orville cheers from behind.

Minted in 2003 by the US Mint, this coin is in proof-like condition and includes the original US Mint packaging with certificate of authenticity. This proof quality coin meets the highest standards in the industry for craftsmanship and was carefully produced to represent the best possible version of the original model. Purchase the 2003 First Flight Centennial Commemorative Clad Proof Half Dollar as a thoughtful gift for a new collector or as a reminder of one of the greatest achievements of the twentieth century.
