2001 U.S. Capitol Visitor Center Proof Clad Half Dollar

The Capitol Building has served as the definitive reminder of the American democracy for over 200 years. In keeping with that spirit, the Capitol is open to the public, receiving more than 5 million visitors a year.  The 2001 U.S. Capitol Visitor Center Clad Half Dollar was issued to commemorate the Congress first assembling in the building in 1800 and the United States Capitol Visitor Center.

Minted in copper-nickel, the coin’s obverse was designed by Dean McMullen and depicts the original Capitol Building with an outline of the present day building, surrounded by stars. The reverse, by Alex Shagin and Marcel Jovine, features the 16 states from 1800 – represented by 16 stars – encircling the center, with inscriptions recognizing the 6th Congress’s 138 Senators and Representatives from 1800.

Minted in 2001 by the US Mint, this coin is in proof condition and includes the original US Mint packaging with certificate of authenticity. Purchase the 2001 U.S. Capitol Visitor Center Uncirculated Clad Half Dollar as a special gift for a beginning collector or as a memento of the foremost American symbol of democracy.
