The CH-47 Chinook Helicopter became the celebrated workhorse of the United States Army in the Vietnam War. The Chinook moved ground forces, and massive amounts of supplies and ammunition in support of combat and contingency operations, but it’s main duty was placing artillery batteries in mountainous areas and keeping those positions resupplied with massive amounts of ammo.

The Chinook soon proved to be such an invaluable aircraft for artillery movement and heavy logistics that it was seldom used as an assault troop carrier. Some of the Chinook fleet were used for casualty evacuation, due to the very heavy demand for the helicopters they were usually overburdened with wounded.

This unique coin was created to celebrate the vital role that the Chinook played in the Vietnam War, and salutes the lives saved, the Army warriors and equipment carried to battle—often under withering enemy fire.
