2013 Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine 5 Troy oz US Mint America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin

Commemorating Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, the US Mint’s fourth 5 Troy oz bullion coin of 2013 in the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin series features the site of a great victory in the War of 1812 and birthplace of America’s National Anthem.

Every coin minted in the impressive America the Beautiful Silver Bullion 5 Troy oz coin program, has its weight, content and purity guaranteed by the US government. Unique among other coins issued by the US Mint, these pieces are a huge 3 inches in diameter and each carries a legal-tender face value of 25 cents – though the market price of silver has been higher for many decades. These coins have been sought by investors for their .999-fine silver content, and demanded by collectors to complete the US Mint America the Beautiful Quarters series. This combination makes them superior as both investments and collectibles.

Celebrating one of the major victories in the War of 1812, The Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine is the site of the "rockets’ red glare.” That well-known line was penned, literally as munitions exploded around him during the bombardment, by Francis Scott Key as he crafted the poem "Defence of Fort McHenry.” That poem would eventually become “The Star Spangled Banner,” our National Anthem. The poem itself was much ignored until an enterprising soul found that the tune of a popular drinking song of the day, “To Anacreon in Heaven,” matched exceedingly well with the lyrics of "Defence of Fort McHenry.” The rest is history.

The obverse of the coin features the 1932 portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan, and brings out the craftsmanship of the original model. The reverse depicts Fort McHenry during the “Defender’s Day” celebration, with exploding fireworks representing the “rockets’ red glare.”
