In 2006 the US Mint celebrated the 300th anniversary of Benjamin Franklin’s birth with a rare and exceptionally designed set. The Chronicles set includes the 2006 Benjamin Franklin “Scientist” Silver Dollar, four stamps honoring Franklin’s many accomplishments, a faithful reproduction of the last edition of Poor Richard’s Almanac, and an exquisitely detailed print by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
Minted in 2006 by the US Mint, the silver dollar, minted in 90% silver and containing 0.7734 Troy oz of silver, has a diameter of 38.1mm and a weight of 26.73 grams. The obverse, designed by Norman E. Nemeth, depicts Franklin famously flying his kite in a storm, attempting to prove the electrical nature of lightening. The reverse is a reproduction of Benjamin Franklin’s “Join, or Die” political cartoon.
