Celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the completion of Mount Rushmore, this superbly designed coin is a tribute to one of America’s most popular historic symbols, and a fine addition to any veteran or beginning coin collection.
The obverse of the 1991 Mount Rushmore Commemorative Uncirculated Silver Dollar was designed by artist Marika Somogyi featuring an image of the Mount Rushmore Memorial wreathed in laurel. Artist Frank Gasparro designed the reverse, which displays a Heraldic Eagle Crest positioned over a map of the United States. Minted in 90% silver and containing 0.7734 Troy oz of silver, the 1991 Mount Rushmore Anniversary Uncirculated Silver Dollar comes in the original US Mint packaging.
The memorial itself, depicting 60 foot sculptured heads of four of our most famous Presidents, Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt, attracts nearly three million visitors annually and stands as a testament to American heritage. After securing funding from Congress, the carving began in 1927 and was completed in 1941. Remarkably for the day, no workers died during the carving process, despite the use of dynamite to carve the faces. This exceedingly popular coin has long been considered the paragon of minting skill, with each coin featuring the historic sculpture bordered by frosted edges. This stunning coin is an excellent tribute to America’s beloved monument and deserves a place in every collection.
