The 1997 National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Silver Dollar was issued on the sixth anniversary of the dedication of the memorial, which honors more than 19,000 men and women who lost their lives in the line of duty. Officially dedicated on October 15, 1991, the memorial walls are engraved with the names of our fallen protectors so that their sacrifice may never be forgotten.
The silver dollar, minted in 90% silver and containing 0.7734 Troy oz of silver, has a diameter of 38.1mm and a weight of 26.73 grams. The obverse, designed by Alfred Maletsky, features two Park police officers making a rubbing of a fallen officer’s name. The reverse of the coin was also designed by Maletsky and depicts a shield with a rose across it, the memorial’s logo, to represent the sacrifices made by the officers.
Minted in 1997 by the US Mint, this coin includes the original US Mint packaging with certificate of authenticity. The 1997 National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Uncirculated Silver Dollar would make a wonderful addition to any US Mint commemorative collection.
