Located in the Black Mountains, 35 miles northeast of the city of Asheville, Mount Mitchell is one of six other peaks in the range that rise above 6,300 feet in elevation. The mountain was named after Elisha Mitchell, a professor at the University of North Carolina, who determined its height in 1835. Later in 1857 he fell to his death at nearby Mitchell Falls, having returned to verify his earlier measurements. The summit includes a new observation deck, constructed and opened to visitors in January 2009, as well as the tomb of Dr. Mitchell.
Minted with an antique bronze finish, and imbued with tan and black enamel, this medallion depicts an aritist’s rendition of the mount, along with its elevation of 6,684 feet. The Mount Mitchell Summiteer Hiking Stick Medallion is a durable and unique reminder of this momentous achievement on your Scouting® journey.
