USCGC Mackinaw (WLBB 30)

The USCGC Mackinaw (WLBB 30) plays a critical role in safeguarding the Great Lakes for the US Coast Guard. This heavy icebreaker carries on the proud legacy and tradition of her predecessor in providing service to the maritime community in the Great Lakes.

The name Mackinaw has its roots in the ancient Native American language of the Great Lakes. Specifically, it is derivative of the word Michilimackinac in the Ojibwa language, meaning “Island of the Great Turtle”. Both Mackinaw (the English derivation) and Mackinac (the French derivation where “ac” is pronounced “aw”) are derived from this word and pronounced (Mak’inô).

Commissioned on 10 June 2006, the USCGC Mackinaw has a displacement of approximately 3,500 tons and carries a crew of over 55 officers and enlisted personnel. Some of the missions that the USCGC Mackinaw conducts on the Great Lakes are search and rescue, buoy tending, domestic icebreaking, Maritime Homeland Security operations, pollution response, law enforcement and public affairs.

Minted from solid bronze, and finished with an antique patina, this coin pays tribute to the USCGC Mackinaw and salutes the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a port view of the USCGC Mackinaw surrounded by stars and the name of the ships, imbued with bold enamel along the edge. The reverse displays the insignia of the USCGC Mackinaw, highlighted with colorful enamel.
