USS Cowpens - The Mighty Moo The USS Cowpens (CG-63) holds an important place in defending American interests and protecting freedom across the globe. A Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser for the US Navy, she is expertly equipped to succeed in even the most demanding of missions. The USS Cowpens was named after the historic Revolutionary War battle, the Battle of Cowpens, where Brigadier General Daniel Morgan soundly defeated a larger, and more experienced British force. The Battle of Cowpens was a major turning point for the American Revolution in the South and the most tactically original victory in the entire war. General Morgan, using an army of mostly untrained militia, defeated a larger seasoned force commanded by Banastre Tarleton. Through clever use of his limited regular troops, and due to the British exhaustion from four days of continuous marching, Morgan engineered a decisive victory, decimating the British force, and capturing or killing a major component of Cornwallis’s southern army. This victory allowed American forces to ensure the British surrender at Yorktown. Commissioned on 9 March 1991, the USS Cowpens has a displacement of approximately 9,600 long tons and stretches some 567 feet in length. Armed with naval guns and anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine missiles, plus other weapons, she is equipped for surface-to-air, surface-to-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. She also is the home of two Seahawk LAMPS III helicopters. This coin is minted in the USA from solid bronze, using special deep-relief coining dies, and hand-finished with an antique patina for exceptional quality and detail. This coin pays tribute to the USS Cowpens and salutes the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a port view of the USS Cowpens sailing through San Diego Bay under the Coronado Bridge, with the ship’s nickname “The Mighty Moo” above. The reverse displays the shield and crest of the USS Cowpens. ™ Department of the Navy. Officially Licensed by the Department of the Navy. Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought: |
