USS Sides FFG-14

The USS Sides (FFG-14) was a force for defending American interests and protecting freedom across the globe. An Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided-missile frigate for the US Navy, she was marvelously equipped to succeed in even the most demanding of missions. The USS Sides was decommissioned on 28 February 2003.

The USS Sides was named after Admiral John Harold Sides, known as the father of the Navy’s guided missile program. His dedication to military advancement and keeping American superiority above reproach provided the push to create the Navy’s first guided missile cruisers.

Commissioned on 2 July 1983, the USS Jarrett has a displacement of approximately 4,100 long tons and stretches some 453 feet in length. Armed with naval guns and anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine torpedoes, with other weapons, she was equipped for surface-to-air, surface-to-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. She was also the home to two SH-60 Sea Hawk helicopters.

Minted in the USA from solid bronze, finished with an antique patina, this coin pays tribute to the USS Sides and salutes the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a scene of the vessel sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge near its homeport of San Francisco. The reverse displays the United States Navy logo.
